W.E.L.K.S. Championship Show 2014 Critique

Many thanks to all the exhibitors who did me the honour of entering under me and took my decisions with such good grace.
There were many close decisions and I am sure a few places will change at another show on another day. Some overall comments; I only found one overshot mouth and all males were entire, nearly all of the dogs were well muscled and fit with just a few who needed to go on a diet. Several hounds needed some serious grooming , and bath would not go amiss. I also found a few hounds over trimmed with no face furnishings or neck coat,
Movement needs to be SERIOUSLY addressed with many hounds moving too close behind and a few whose front assemblies were lacking correct angulation.

1ST FINLAS AT CLAONAIGLEN (PARSONS & MCKINNON)
A strong well grown male puppy showing much promise. Nice masculine head with a lovely eye, Powerful neck falling into adequate lay of shoulder. Good topline with a dark coat of the correct texture, strong bone and good feet, Moved well enough for his age and can only improve with practice. BP
2ND REGALFLIGHT RUEBEN (BOND)
Another strong puppy much younger than 1 and obviously his first show so not as relaxed and in tune with his handler, slightly better angulated behind but he needs to strengthen in hind movement, a heavier coat but a attractive puppy who shows promise.

1ST LUCKHURST ORMINSCRAIG (MRS N A BYE)
Standing along this is a rather rangy puppy, good head with nice ears, harsh coat but rather straight in shoulder, moved ok. hopefully time will improve the overall picture and help him settle.

1ST FRITZENS DRUM TO NEROCHE (IMP) (WRAGG)
Another hound that stood alone but worthy of his place. This hound has been imported in from Germany but has U.K. bred sire and dam and is looking promising. He has a lovely outline and showed himself off today, A really lovely head, slightly upright in shoulder and needs a little more angulation in his hind quarters but for his age I can forgive this as I am sure he will settle down as his brisket drops. beautifully presented and looked promising on the move.

1ST REGALFLIGHT POACHER AT LEKSMOOR (GREENHALGH)
This dog is very balanced and what I would call very honest hound. No exaggerations and although he looked difficult to handle his owner persevered and got the best out of him today. Lovely feet and nice slope in the pastern - One to watch for the future.
2ND LUCKHURST NEBO TO WOLFSCASTLE (OWEN & BRODIE)
Another nice hound but rather too small for a male although he fits the standard so I forgave this, he has a lovely head and outline and moved ok.
3RD HYNDSIGHT TEMPEST (HARRINGTON & FINNETT)

1ST HAMILTONHILL FRED D MERCURY ( WILSON)
Not handled by the owner, he was a difficult hound to settle and assess but overall the type I like, no straight lines (except the front legs) curves in the right place and a nice coat. A very lovely head with correct face furnishings giving him a typical expression, head placed on a strong powerful neck into a nice lay of shoulder and correct topline. Placing him for a good picture was difficult but I saw enough to award him the Dog CC

Open - Dog - Entries: 3 Absentees: 1
1ST CH COTHERSTONE SHOT AND STEEL ( MORTON & MORGAN)
A dark well boned hound at the peak of his show career, but today he seemed rather reluctant to move with his usual enthusiasm. A plain head with little face and neck coat , rather large heavy ears but held back into the head and a lovely strong neck and correct angles front and aft. Good topline and sound movement coming and going. Res CC
2ND LAIRD OF SUMMERISLE ( STABB & TAYLOR)
A stronger headed hound than 1 and he does not move anything like as good as the winner. Very deep chest and a lovely mane, nice bone but rather flat on his topline which tends to slope, overall a mature hound with merit.

1ST CELTICMOON SHADOW HUNTRESS (DAY & O'BRIEN)
Chunky puppy, 6 months old and did enough for her place. She was at her first show and it showed but overall a nice type.

1ST CHARBONNEL GRETA AT LADYGROVE (PHILLIPS)
Pretty bitch balanced with a lovely head and expression, nice topline and moved the best in this class. Slightly narrow in front and a tad upright in shoulder but overall I thought promising, I hope she makes size.
2ND HYNDSIGHT REASON TO BELIEVE ( FINNETT & HEATHCOTE)
Movement was difficult to assess on two and three, this bitch has a rather exaggerated topline but I am sure this is due to the fact she has never been shown and both her and her kennel mate (3rd) were very tense. Fronts need to tighten and time and practise is what they both need.
3RD HYNDSIGHT MAGIC IN THE NIGHT (FINNETT & HEATHCOTE)

Junior - Bitch - Entries: 6 Absentees: 3
1ST WOLFSCASTLE GREYCE ( BRODIE & CODY)
A nice type of bitch well matured and shapely with a lot to like and fitting the standard well and she would have been considered in the bitch CC line up had her hind movement been better. I hope time and exercise improves this as she is a lovely bitch in profile and did enough to win her first place.
2ND CHARBONNEL GOBI TO LADYGROVE (PHILLIPS)
Gave away a lot on age to 1 but a lovely bitch puppy who I understand could not enter the puppy class as the owner was on her own and her litter sister was in the puppy bitch class. I loved her and was pleased to give her the Best Puppy bitch place, losing out to the rather nice dog puppy for the Best Puppy in Breed slot.
3RD GREYFLAX MUSTANG SALLY OF BRACKENLAND ( EDWARDS)

Post Graduate - Bitch - Entries: 8 Absentees: 2
1ST SHAGIEAD LADY SEA WITH GREYBROWS ( REDMOND & FRIEND)
When I judge I always hope to find something really nice to start as often shows tend to get rather tedious when the same dogs win over and over. However the young contenders do have to be good enough to win over the big girls and boys BUT it can be done and this bitch proved it today. A young beauty, all the right curves, no exaggerations, fits the standard, nicely shown in a gentle and proper way on a loose lead the owner blending into the back ground so all you saw was the dog. Certainly the dog I would have wanted to take home. CC BOB
2ND LODHAINN BENNBEHEULA TO JAMALISON ( GRIMSHAW)
A much smaller bitch than one but a nice honest type, handled well and moved ok but she lacks the bone and substance of the winner. Time will improve her I think.
3RD ARDLANCIEN EIRYN TO BALGALED ( ASTON)

Limit - Bitch - Entries: 7 Absentees: 1
1ST GREYFLAX JUST PEACHY (BAILEY)
This hound won on her place in this class on overall excellent movement. A beautiful head and expression, strong neck, lovely topline which she held on the move, nice straight strong bone and good feet, she is looking rather immature and time will improve her. Res CC
2ND GENTIEHUN ADELAIDE OF KALEGINY (CONSTANTINE)
A smaller chunkier bitch but needs to lose a little weight . A much plainer head but lovely ears and georgous raggy correct coat. Her angles are very good and her feet and pasterns correct, a nice deep chest and tuck up with good hind angulation just wish she was a tad bigger. She lost to no 1 on movement but overall a very lovely little bitch.
3RD COTHERSTONE TAKE SILK ( MCGILL)

Open - Bitch - Entries: 4 Absentees: 0
1ST CH COTHERSTONE DUCHENNE ( MORTON & MORGAN)
She won the class on her excellent movement, she is very sound (one of the soundest today) I would like more length in the loin and the lack of face (and neck) furnishings gave her a untypical rather hard expression. Beautifully shown by a expert handler, she was considered for the CC but she had to give way to the younger ladies climbing the ladder today.
2ND CH LADYGROVE CALAMITY JANE AT AMIRO ( MORGAN)
A much older bitch 6 years but is carrying too much weight, she won her place on overall type. She is constructed well with good angles fore and aft. Lovely low let down hocks but had to give way to the better moving bitch.
3RD CLAONAIGLEN FIONNELIGHE ( PARSONS & MCKINNON)
